Maintenance is a financial assistance/provision as far as law can do. Provisions for maintenance of children, aged parents, husband, wife, close relatives, senior citizens and the like are also coming under it. Maintenance is awarded depending upon the financial capacity and status of the parties. Not only bare maintenance, but also a decent living is often the motive of law.
